Chapter 12

Mr. Jones visited that evening, and though he declared himself pleased with Darcy’s recovery, he was reluctant to agree to allow him to travel just yet.

“I had an uneasy journey myself,” he said. The hems of his trousers agreed with his declaration. “I have seen few people travel far from home today. One carriage was jolted about so badly one of its occupants fell out. I would not risk it with you, sir. As long as it is agreeable to everyone, I would suggest you remain here at least until the roads are drier. It cannot be many days now.”

Elizabeth could not help feeling a surge of happiness at this news, though she scolded herself for it. No matter how much she enjoyed Darcy’s company over these past days, she had to remind herself this was not the man he was in his usual state. Once he recovered, he would not be able to leave Longbourn fast enough. The more fond of him she grew, the harder it would be to see him once again grow cold and arrogant.

But regardless of her own feelings, the fact remained that Darcy needed her help if he was to recover. She was not such a weakling that a few days in his company would see her fall madly in love.

When he looked at her and smiled, she felt a slight wavering that she quickly dismissed. She would do all she could to help him, and, no matter how he behaved afterward, she at least would have the comfort of knowing she did the right thing.
